EIT Climate-KIC at the Climate Adaptation Summit 2021

EIT Climate-KIC will be taking part in the Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS), held online on 25 and 26 January. Hosted by the Netherlands, the summit convenes global leaders and local stakeholders. It will see the launch of the Adaptation Action Agenda, which sets out commitments to deliver endeavours and partnerships to make our world more resilient to the effects of climate change.

Over the course of 24 hours, a range of CAS activities will be available for streaming from time zones around the globe, and EIT Climate-KIC will be participating in a number of them.

On 25 January, EIT Climate-KIC joins the Race to Resilience, a UNFCCC High Level Climate Champions campaign that aims to catalyse action by non-state actors by 2030, to build the resilience of four billion people from groups and communities who are vulnerable to climate risks. 

The day will also see the global premiere of “The Story of DARAJA and James,” a feature film about a pioneering African urban weather forecasting and early warning system. The project is supported by EIT Climate-KIC and its partner Resurgence.

The following day, EIT Climate-KIC and partner UNDP will launch the Adaptation Innovation Marketplace (AIM). The launch will feature words by EIT Climate-KIC’s Chief Strategy Officer Tom Mitchell, who will join the UNDP’s Administrator Achim Steiner via video. Mitchell introduced EIT Climate-KIC’s role in AIM at the Gobeshona Conference earlier this week.

Informing these perspectives is EIT Climate-KIC’s programme devoted to climate change adaptation in Europe, the Resilient Regions Deep Demonstration. The programme uses a comprehensive approach to shift regions’ hazard-by-hazard risk reduction practices to a state where people, communities and systems can withstand and bounce back from shocks, to persist through slow-onset stresses and transform through crises. Early partners include regional governments in Andalusia, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the Dolomites and the Glasgow City Region.
