Limassol’s Climathon: Let’s clean the seafront

The Climate-KIC Climathon is a global 24-hour climate change event which will take place simultaneously in major cities around the world on 28 October 2016. 

In Limassol the Climate-KIC Climathon will begin on the morning of the 28 October EEST and finish on the following day. It is organised by the The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) to create new solutions to clean up the Limassol seafront.

The Challenge

During the months of July and August, there were numerous reports on the poor quality of the seawater in the Limassol area. A thorough study conducted by the Cyprus University of technology, has identified the various sources of the pollution. Participants of the Limassol Climathon will create new solutions to help clear up the seafront, and improve the quality of the seawater in the area.

Pitching to expert judges

The Climathon event will culminate in presentation of each group’s idea in front of panel members who will provide valuable feedback. The panel is comprised of different science and business experts.

The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) is a public university committed to applied research and it has strategically positioned itself in operating, educating and performing research related to sustainability and climate change. The university offers various undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Environmental science and technology, renewable energy systems and sustainable design. In terms of research the university was a coordinator or partner in 204 externally funded research programmes, receiving €34m, out of which €8.8m (55 programmes) are directly related to sustainability, environment and climate change.
