Debrecen Climathon: Relationship between the development of city traffic and climate change
The Climate-KIC Climathon is a global 24-hour climate change event which will take place simultaneously in major cities around the world on 28 October 2016.
In Debrecen, the Climate-KIC Climathon will begin on the morning of the 28 October CET and finish on the following day. It is organised by Kerpely Kálmán Szakkollégium and aims to improve the relationship between city traffic and the effect that this has on climate change.
Throughout history, mankind have always been changing their environment. As a result, human intervention caused climate change, with the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The source of these emissions vary from factories, powerplants, agricultural activities and transportation.
Two-thirds of the Hungarian population live in cities, where 75% of our energy consumption happens. So, it is extremely important to facilitate positive changes in consumer habits, saving energy to the power consumption in residential buildings, as well as in transportation. All in all, changing the environmental attitude of the population and the business sector.
In the public transport of Debrecen, there was a noticeable aspiration to lower the emission of pollutants in recent years. However, we desperately need to shape the environmental attitude of the consumers. We must explain the advantages of environmental awareness, and how it can affect citizen’s everyday lives.
How can the public transport, the general public and the business sector work together?
How can we enhance environmental awareness, and which are the best measures to hasten the fruition of these projects?
These are the questions we want to answer in our challenge. Reaching the point where the transportation of Debrecen through combined efforts can make a positive impact on environmental attitude, whilst lowering the emission of pollutants, is our overall goal.
The difference between what we can do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.” –Mahatma Gandhi
