COP24: Zero emission construction sites are possible now – don’t wait for 2030

LOCATION
Katowice, Poland
DATE
12:15-13:15, 5 December 2018

Venue: Nordic Pavilion

EIT Climate-KIC is at COP24 to highlight the importance of catalysing a shift in the financial sector to achieve transformative change to meet the challenge of climate change.

As Europe’s main climate innovation initiative, EIT Climate-KIC will be sharing how we work to bring the right partners together at the right time, to address how to create systemic impact in the financial system through innovation. With finance as a ‘systems driver’, representatives will discuss how the organisation is working with the climate innovation community to find the best ways to ‘nudge’ the financial system across its portfolio of activities in four work areas – urban transitions, sustainable land use, sustainable production systems, and decision metrics and finance.

How can we reduce emission from urban construction sites by utilising alternative fuels or electrifying the sites?

The demand for construction is increasing in urban areas and because of urbanisation, there is more need for the refurbishment of older buildings. Construction contributes to increased emissions in highly populated areas as heavy machinery is needed for this. A project funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers is looking into this through a dialogue-based approach with the cities of Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki. One of the key issues will be how public procurement can drive this transformation and how the market can deliver heavy machinery to fulfil the requirements.

This session will present some initial experiences with tenders to promote zero-emission construction sites from Oslo and a discussion on how to get to zero emission construction sites in the Nordic cities.
