GLF Bonn Digital Summit 2020: Food in the time of climate crisis

How to feed the world without eating the planet? On 3-5 June, GLF will host one of the world’s first global digital conferences on integrated land use, with a focus on the 2020 theme of GLF – ‘Food and Livelihoods.’

Food production and agricultural systems are currently one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, a key driver of deforestation and the greatest threat to biodiversity.

However, increasing global food production to satisfy the demands of a growing population doesn’t need to further stress the globe’s natural resources and its biodiversity. Research shows that people living in multi-functional landscapes supported by intact ecosystems benefit from more nutritious foods and sustainable livelihoods.

It’s time to transform this problem into an opportunity.

Strong alliances for a sustainable future

We believe that the way we treat natural resources in one location has repercussions for the wider landscape, particularly in this time of climate crisis. By building a strong alliance with diverse stakeholders (farmers, communities, companies, civil society organizations, governments, donors and consumers), we are working to create a better future for people and nature by making responsible business ‘the new normal’ and we are tackling the challenges in food production systems by focusing on agriculture, forest and business.

During this segment, we will highlight opportunities for food production systems to support broader landscape sustainability actions being taken by a wide range of stakeholders to deliver this.

Join the Director of the Sustainable Land Use team, Daniel Zimmer in Session 2: Thriving together — how strong alliances achieve a sustainable future

14:00 – 18:00

The Rainforest Alliance works at the intersection of business, agriculture and forests by bringing diverse allies together. This enables the alliance to make deep-rooted changes on some of the most pressing social and environmental issues. The session will showcase how the alliance protect forests and protected landscapes, improves the livelihoods of farmers and forest communities while helping them mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis in practical and effective ways.
