Climate KIC receives €20M grant to scale ‘Systems Innovation as a Service’ model
The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) has awarded Climate KIC a final core grant of 20,194,083 EUR to support our operational activities until the end of 2024. The generous contribution will support the final phase of Climate KIC becoming financially sustainability as we shift operations and processes to scale our transformative approach to addressing climate change: Systems Innovation as a Service (SIaaS).
This new model entails working with the EU, Member States, cities, and regions to map climate action needs, priorities, and actions. From there, we co-design and implement place-based portfolios of innovations on the ground to match scalable solutions to industry value chains.
By connecting key stakeholders that are developing new markets related to climate challenges, and by enabling large-scale ‘learning by doing’ frameworks, the model mobilises public and private funding to test and produce actionable intelligence, shared learning, and solutions. This can trigger tangible impact that take place simultaneously.
The two-year grant will be used to strengthen Climate KIC’s internal operational capabilities to scale the model commercially. The successful implementation of SIaaS will support European stakeholders meet ambitious societal challenges while accelerating the transition to a zero-carbon and resilient world.
By 2027, Climate KIC’s Strategic Agenda aims to achieve key outcomes through systems innovation:
- Contribute to the avoidance of over 500 million tonnes CO2
- Strengthen the resilience of 10 million people
- Help leverage over €100 billion to support scale-up of innovations to tackle climate change
- Generate 50,000 green jobs
- Become the strategic partner of choice for over 50 cities regions and countries across Europe
- Enhance the innovation and entrepreneurial skills of over 200,000 people across Europe, equipping them to be leaders of climate action.
