Adaptation Innovation cluster

Supporting Tanzania’s climate resilience through collaboration and innovation

Tanzania is experiencing significant climate impacts, rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts and more frequent extreme weather events that threaten rural communities and smallholder farmers.

At the same time, a vibrant local ecosystem is developing innovative solutions to build resilience and adapt to these changes.

The Adaptation Innovation Cluster strengthens this ecosystem. A Climate KIC initiative delivered with local partners in Tanzania and funded by Irish Aid, it connects innovators, businesses, researchers, investors, policymakers and communities around a common purpose: enhancing climate resilience through collaboration and innovation.

The purpose of the Adaption Innovation Cluster

Building meaningful collaboration and driving mindset shifts

We foster deeper collaboration through workshops, events and networking. By connecting people and organisations across sectors, we enable locally-embedded adaptation solutions to emerge and grow.

Unlocking impact-driven innovation

We support innovators at every stage through programmes like the ClimAccelerator and Climathons, providing mentorship, training and access to financial support.

Strengthening capacities and learning

Through education, training and leadership development, we create the conditions for more effective collaboration and locally-led climate action.

Entrepreneurship activities

Adaptation & Resilience ClimAccelerator

A global programme helping climate start-ups grow their impact, delivered in Tanzania by our partner SmartLab. Tanzanian entrepreneurs are developing precision farming tools, resilient seeds, and sustainable nutrition solutions that help communities adapt to climate change. Start-ups get hands-on mentorship from experts who understand the challenges, access to funding, expert support to measure and strengthen their impact, and the chance to test their solutions where they matter most.

Climathon

A multi-day hackathon where innovators, students and community leaders team up to tackle real climate challenges — from making seaweed farming more resilient, to AI-enabled early warning systems. Teams get mentorship, work through challenges together, and pitch their solutions to expert judges. Winning teams receive awards to bring their ideas to life.

Youth organisation support

Long-term partnerships with local youth organisations that provide training, mentorship and platforms for young leaders to drive climate action. Participants — especially young women and rural youth — gain skills in climate literacy, entrepreneurship and advocacy. Many become recognised voices shaping Tanzania’s climate future.

Capacity building programme for AI-driven climate change solutions

A six-month programme teaching people how to use AI and data science to solve climate problems, run by Omdena. Participants learn through hands-on workshops and real-world projects, gradually building their skills. The programme ends with participants developing their own AI solutions for climate adaptation challenges—tackling issues that matter in their own communities and beyond.

ClimateFresk

Interactive workshops that build shared understanding of climate science and its systemic impacts. Using a participatory, card-based approach, participants explore the causes and consequences of climate change—connecting climate drivers with ecosystems and socio-economic systems. The workshops create a foundation for informed climate action by making complex science accessible and engaging for diverse groups.

Leadership skills for climate adaptation

A three-day in-person workshop building leadership skills for climate adaptation. Young leaders strengthen their abilities in communication, storytelling, and advocacy while deepening their understanding of climate policies from local to global levels. Participants explore the intersection of climate and gender, and design practical initiatives they can implement in their communities—turning knowledge into locally relevant action.

Adaptation impact validation certificate

A structured process helping start-ups assess and validate their climate impact. Through training, coaching and guided assessment, start-ups identify the climate hazards they address, the type of adaptation they deliver, potential risks, and relevant performance indicators. Successful completion results in an Adaptation Impact Validation Certificate—strengthening credibility with investors and partners.

Participants driving climate innovation on the ground

In Tanzania, entrepreneurs supported through our Adaptation & Resilience ClimAccelerator are developing climate-smart solutions such as precision farming tools, resilient seed varieties, sustainable insect protein and improved nutrition security. The videos below highlight these diverse stories of innovation, resilience and imagination — showing how farmers, creatives, and communities are shaping the future of Tanzania.
