Melbourne Climathon: How can you show the impacts of people’s choices to make Melbourne more resilient and sustainable?

The Climate-KIC Climathon is a global  climate change event which will take place simultaneously in major cities around the world on 28 October 2016. 

In Melbourne, the Climate-KIC Climathon will begin on the 28 October AEDT and finish the following day. It is organised by the City of Melbourne and looks to show the impacts of people’s choices to make Melbourne more resilient and sustainable. 

The Challenge

Melbourne is facing a range of new challenges as the world’s climate changes. More days of extreme heat, higher intensity rainfall, extreme storms, reduced levels of overall rainfall, rising sea-levels and risks of future droughts are all predicted. These events provide us an indication of what might be in-store for us in the future. As the climate changes, it is likely that more of these events will occur with greater intensity or more often, or both.

At this point, fundamental change is required to ensure we minimise the impacts of our changing climate.

Your Challenge:
How can you show the impacts of people’s choices to make Melbourne more resilient and sustainable? Find highly visual, innovative and interactive ways, using Melbourne’s buildings, trees, trams and other existing city assets, to help people make smarter choices and change their behaviour.

Join forces with other like-minded entrepreneurs, students and innovators and get coached by local leaders from academia, business, government and industry, including CEO of Sustainability Victoria, Stan Krpan.

You can register as a group or as an individual. Participation is open to both participants with existing ideas, as well as to participants that still need to develop potential solutions.

After 24 intense hours of collaboration, excitement and solution-finding, the best idea will be selected by a jury consisting of relevant local stakeholders.

The winning team will be invited to a networking breakfast to meet and connect with CLIMATHON partners and to pitch their CLIMATHON solution to an influential audience.

How can we help people make smarter choices and become motivated to change their behaviour by showing the impact (costs/benefits/savings) of everyday actions?

How can we communicate these messages in an innovative, interactive and highly visible way – by using Melbourne’s buildings, trees, sidewalks, trams etc.?
