Over the past decade, we’ve witnessed a myriad of milestones that have put the vision of a prosperous, climate-resilient society on the main stage of the world’s attention. From the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals to the Paris Agreement, there is an overwhelming global consensus that collective action is needed to meet the 2°C target. The painful truth, however, is that Europe and the world are not on track to reach the 2°C target.

Time is running out and climate innovation initiatives must be accelerated, scaled more quickly and must lead to more systemic climate impact. Digitalisation is, and will be even more so in the future, a powerful means of effectively responding to the complexity of the climate change challenge.

Bringing powerful technologies of data sensing and -collection (Internet of things), data analysis (artificial Intelligence and machine learning) and data encryption and transaction (distributed ledger technology) to climate action opens a new opportunity window for highly impactful climate action initiatives that lead to the deep decarbonisation that is needed to reach the 2°C target.

In the ever-changing and evolving world of digital transformation, keeping up with the most recent developments and their respective impact potential can seem a daunting and almost impossible task. Climate KIC is happy to make this report available to all who are interested in the nexus of digital technologies and climate action; to all who share the strong belief that collaboration and knowledge exchange is critical in the common effort to tackle climate change.
