Transformative Innovation Policy Workshop

LOCATION
Online
DATE
8 November 2021 from 16:00 to 17:30 CET

Tackling the climate crisis requires transformative system change – a fundamental shift to place sustainability at the core of our societal systems. Thus, sustainability transitions also require a shift in policymaking towards Transformative Innovation Policy (TIP) – a new, experimental approach to policymaking.

Transformative Innovation Policy aims to contribute to the sustainability transition by mobilizing necessary innovations to tackle the societal and environmental challenges encapsulated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  At the same time, transformative innovation policy necessitates better take-up of science in policymaking as well as consideration of citizens’ and stakeholder needs in policy design, implementation, and learning.

In this workshop, we will cover the principles of transformative innovation policy, as well as how the use of new tools (Policy co-creation, X-Curve, Value Network Mapping, transformative theory of change) can contribute to closing the gap between science-policy-society in transformative innovation policy. We will learn about their successful application in EIT Climate-KIC’s projects.

Speakers

  • Anna Wang, Expert Advisor at Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT)
  • Christoph Brodnik, Scientist at Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT)
  • Michael Dinges, Thematic Coordinator at Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT)
  • Cristian Matti, Head of Strategic Research at EIT Climate-KIC

Moderated by: Annalisa Spalazzi, Regional Innovation Scheme Programme Manager

Main benefits of attending

  • Learn about principles of transformative innovation policy and the importance of science-policy-society interface
  • Familiarize with the added value of new tools (Policy co-creation, X-Curve, Value Network Mapping, transformative theory of change) for the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of transformative innovation policies
  • Learn from practical cases of implementation

Target participants

  • EIT Regional Innovation Scheme (RIS) Hubs, partners, organizations and stakeholders from Southern and Central Eastern Europe.
  • Practitioners interested in learning about tools for facilitating systemic relations in multi-actor setting
  • Policymakers, authorities and programme owners at the EU, national, regional, and local level.

2021 Transitions Policy Lab

The European Green Deal is the EU’s strategy to move towards climate neutrality and circular economy by the transformative policy. That transformation requires the alignment of multiple stakeholders and instruments with existing regional innovation plans such as the Cohesion Policy. Policy mixes emerge with the purpose of reinforcing synergies and complementarities between EU, national and regional innovation initiatives.

The Transition Policy Lab addresses the goal of shifting practices for policymaking by removing barriers for enabling the necessary institutional change. It is aimed to build capacity to co-design and implement systemic strategies that can lead to potentially transformative policies and actions.

It consists of a series of five interrelated capacity-building activities implemented through three different formats multi-stakeholders setting, science-based training and executive programmes.
