Looking ahead to 2040, the Province of Utrecht is striving to create a sustainable Utrecht, and to preserve the region’s appeal, being a meeting point of knowledge and creativity, with a rich culture in an attractive landscape. However, congested roads, air pollution and rapid urbanization, among other factors, are threatening this goal. For this reason, the Province of Utrecht, companies, institutes and nongovernmental organisations are striving to consolidate a strong region, taking co-ownership of the objectives and co-creation. Key areas of intervention are: Water safety and flooding (e.g. Room for the Lek), water shortage, subterranean space, synchronisation and development of subterranean thermal energy, drinking water, soil subsidence, water quality, soil and water perception, administrative organisation of water management.
