EIT Climate-KIC is a knowledge and innovation community established in 2010 and funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union. Our purpose is to tackle climate change through innovation.
We are Europe’s largest public-private partnership with this purpose. At the heart of our endeavour is a pan-European community of innovators and changemakers eager to work on tough challenges, willing to engage in ambitious and unorthodox experiments, and committed to collective learning.

Our mission is to catalyse systemic change for climate action through innovation in areas of human activity that have a critical impact on greenhouse gas emissions – cities, lands, materials and finance – and to create climate-resilient communities. Our Theory of Change is focused on empowering people to change systems – through exploration, experimentation and demonstration – to enable viable alternatives at scale.
At the heart of our approach is ‘systems innovation as a service’ whereby we create a space for a portfolio of strategic innovation options and experiments, oriented around structural levers of change, designed with and for problem owners.
We act as a multi-sided platform, working across boundaries and across sectors, fostering innovation as a catalyst for transformation. We work together with problem owners, like city and regional governments, industry owners and directors, community organisations and policy makers, to orchestrate a portfolio approach to innovation interventions. We facilitate the creation of innovation consortia. We challenge and seek to enrich business model design. We offer tailored support for experimentation, implementation and scaling. We provide funding. We incubate very early stage ideation and pre-seed innovation with a view of contributing to systemic change. We place an emphasis on education as a driver of behavioural change through new skills and capabilities and on policy innovation. We run programmes for students, start-ups and innovators across Europe via centres in major cities and regions, convening a community of excellence in people and organisations.
Purpose of the role
Climate KICs brand newly devised Young Innovators programme aims to empower youth to reduce climate change through innovation, to understand, explore and mitigate against carbon intensive lifestyles. This programme aims to boost the skills of young people (aged 12 – 18 years) and prepare them for leading roles in climate innovation. This needs to happen now, as in just a short s time, these young people will become the leaders of our societies, businesses and nations. This is a huge opportunity to tackle climate change through learning and innovation from an early age.
Transformational learning experiences – context:
The next few years are probably the most important in our history to prepare future generations to lead a prosperous, inclusive, resilient society based on a net-zero carbon circular economy. Our mission is to empower 300,000 teens by 2020, and 3 million by 2030, transforming over 10% of all teens living in Europe, and beyond, into agents of change to become climate innovators.
With the implementation of the Young Innovators, the future generation is being prepared with the knowledge and understanding to lead the movement for a systemic change. As part of this drive, Young Innovators offers these young students the systemic tools and entrepreneurial mindset to change the economy and society immediately.
We work with Climate-KIC partners, learning designers and teachers as multipliers of change, and to bring climate change challenges as part of their studies at school. The programme introduces a systems innovation approach through visual thinking and participatory tools and trains schoolteachers to bring climate innovation into the classroom. We have designed the programme working closely with partners and our community players that are involved in the education curriculum and the training of teachers themselves.
The Young Climathon is the lighthouse event of the Young Innovators programme. The event is a 1 to 2-day city climate hackathon where students work on the city’s and partner’s challenges, develop solutions or start transforming their solution into a project or business idea.

The role of Young Climathon Manager within the context of the Young Innovators programme aims to help to further develop and adapt the Young Climathon concept and ensuring the programme delivers value to the cities and to the young people – and that can be sustained after the Young Climathon event. As part of the Young Innovators Team you will work in close alignment with the (the established) Climathon team to use synergies.
Work in close collaboration with all other colleagues in the Young Innovators and the Climathon Team to:
- Modify and adapt the Young Climathon concept – based on current learnings.
- Further develop the value proposition for cities, partners and schools and set-up of a support pool for the development of city / corporate / school challenges.
- From first contact – through to registration, preparation, implementation and follow-up after the event, design and implement the process for cities, partners and schools that apply to host a Young Climathon.
- Coordinate with all local organisations and partners to ensure the right level of quality and implementation on the ground.
- Develop Quality Standards for the Young Climathon and update the Handbook on a regular basis.
Together with the Young Innovators Community Manager and the Climate-KIC Community Team connect cities and partners to our Alumni and Partner Community that could act as mentors/coaches during the Young Climathon event and in the follow-up.
Coordinate with the Data and learning colleague on how to best measure impact and capture learnings.
Coordinate with internal teams and innovation programmes to see how other parts of the organisation can support the building of a movement and/or integrate the Young Climathon in their activities.
In close alignment with the Young Innovators and the Climathon Team
- Recruitment of participating cities, companies and schools
- Develop an effective onboarding system for the cities, partners and schools (FAQ, webinars, best practice sharing, challenge co-creation)
- Integration of tools for systems innovation
- Experimenting with the integration of innovative tools and technologies
In close cooperation with the Communication colleagues and the Community Manager
- Develop an outreach campaign
- Support in the development of communication material
- Develop the Young Climathon Website that it fits user needs
Support in setting up partnerships and coordinate with organisations supporting a) the recruitment of cities, schools and participants and b) in experimenting with innovative tools and technologies.
Development and coordination of partnerships with hack implementation partners.
In line with the strategic and funding goals of EIT Climate-KIC, contribute to unlocking large scale future funding opportunities. This will include the creation of value propositions for cities and companies, and relationship building.
Collaborate with internal teams/services – such as communications and future funding team to prepare case studies, marketing materials, briefings, position papers, success stories and other material to appear to funders and strategic partners.
Management and administration
Maintain a strong personal commitment to efficient management with respect to funders, internal processes and systems, and internal policies (e.g. travel, expenses).
Engage in report writing and financial administration as appropriate to satisfy the needs of funders.

- Bachelor or Master’s degree in relevant field
- Interest in the fields of climate change, entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainability

- Open and engaging personality and the confidence to converse of all levels and through multiple mediums
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment
- Confidence to work autonomously and as an active team player
- Some demonstrable experience in working in a competition/challenge type activity
- Experience to working with young people
- Experience in working with multiple stakeholders and partner types
- Ability to speak German, French or Spanish
