Climate adaptation strategies in the energy sector as a response to extreme weather events

The effects of extreme weather result in a high demand for energy that energy producers must anticipate. The goal of Extreme Events for Energy Providers (E3P) is to translate climate projections into tools that will help energy providers anticipate future extremes. E3P will provide the energy supply and production industry with the ability to present medium to long-term plans for climate adaptation and risk assessment.

The climate change issue

Recent weather events suggest climate change plays a significant role in modifying the severity and frequency of extreme weather. Extreme weather events such as summer heat waves are becoming increasingly unpredictable. This increases the vulnerability of communities and reduces the resilience of socio-economic regulations, such as infrastructure or insurance. These intensified weather extremes have the potential to overwhelm current coping strategies particularly in the energy sector.

The project solution

The E3P project presents a number of computer products, such as software, maps and data. These can aid energy providers in evaluating potential climate extremes. The project also provides training for students and professionals on the proposed impact of extreme weather events, subsequently facilitating more informed decision making.

Existing climate data are incorporated into the E3P software, for example, maps of environmental risk. These can show users potential risk areas, indicating where mitigation measures are necessary. These products will enable energy providers to offer cost-effective and thorough strategies to consumers.

The overall aim of the project is to provide energy providers and consumers with a level of preparation in the case of extreme weather events.

The role of Climate-KIC

Climate-KIC has helped to position the project as a business. It has provided funding to our European partners, allowing concentrated research to be conducted in each area of the project.

“The Climate-KIC network has allowed us to explore new ideas and Climate-KIC, itself, has helped us to move the project forward quickly.”Pascal YiouCEA
