As one of Climate-KIC’s flagship projects, the Building Technologies Accelerator focuses on measurable CO2 reduction in the building technology market – including both refurbishment as well as new buildings.

Products range from innovative façades, sustainable wood structures, home energy systems to innovative work environments. Understanding the behaviour of occupants in combination with the complexity of buildings and innovations is key. To meet user and market needs, the products will be tested in their very early development stage in five ‘living labs’ in both residential and office buildings.

The project supports innovative product development at the leading research institutions Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, ETH & EMPA Zurich in Switzerland, Instituto Valenciano de la Edificación in Spain, and Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.

Living labs

Living labs are buildings to test technology prototypes in real-life environments, the people living or working in a living lab are part of the prototype testing. By conducting tests in the living labs with actual building users and in real climate conditions, researchers can evaluate the performance of new products in a more realistic manner.

The living labs are located across the major European climatic zones to cover all important user requirements. Involvement of many private sector partners in the living labs and consequent business orientation and will assure and accelerate the market entry and dissemination.

Real world test beds

With a global leading property management company Knight Frank, the Building Technologies Accelerator has a very important and future oriented business partner. Knight Frank will engage with their client network to test the technical innovations in their properties.

Through this open innovation ecosystem around living labs and real world test beds as well as by bringing together all relevant market players, the project provides new, scalable low carbon building technologies all over Europe, stimulates market processes and substantially contributes to climate change mitigation.
