Timisoara’s Climathon: Sustainable Rehabilitation of Timisoara

The Climate-KIC Climathon is a global 24-hour climate change event which will take place simultaneously in major cities around the world on 28 October 2016.

In Timisoara the Climate-KIC Climathon will begin on the morning of the 28 October EEST and finish on the following day. It is organised by the Timis Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture to create new solutions which will rehabilitate degraded buildings in Timisoara.

The Challenge

Rehabilitating degraded buildings in Timisoara is a true and real concern, both for citizens and for the authorities, but not materialized in sustainable solutions to implement. The city has a degrading heritage (consisting of historical buildings). There is no sustainable or environmental friendly solution for rehabilitation.

The methods used both by the private owners and the public authorities mostly imply covering the buildings in polistyren, a method considered to be energy efficient and esthetic. The problem is that this material is not environmental friendly, in other cities it was proven to be not sustainable and the real climate conditions of our city will most probably lead to this conclusion as well.

The challenge would be to find the most sustainable and environmental friendly solutions to rehabilitate the city, now that the public authority and the private owners can also access European financing to do so.
Today Timisoara has a non-action on the buildings that leads to progressive degradation and some even become a public danger. In Timisoara, the most beautiful and significant buildings are great palaces, with many owners, and the likelihood that they will act jointly in order to start the rehabilitation process is minimal. This challenge is a matter of actuality and great interest especially because now that there is new legislation regarding the authorities’ power to invest in private owned property.

Pitching to expert judges

The Climathon event will culminate in presentation of each group’s idea in front of panel members who will provide valuable feedback. The panel is comprised of different science and business experts.
