Herzliya’s Climathon: Improving transportation and mobility flow into the city centre
The Climate-KIC Climathon is a global 24-hour climate change event which will take place simultaneously in major cities around the world on 28 October 2016.
In Herzliya the Climate-KIC Climathon will begin on the morning of the 28 October IDT and finish on the following day. It is organised by Herzliya municipality, Herzliya Accelerator Center and Hi park (herzliya industrial park) to create new solutions to improve transportation and mobility flow into the city centre.
How do we improve transportation flow in the city by offering and improving access to more sustainable options, and by generating, collecting , and processing data to enable better decision making and service availability?
Herzliya is seeing annual increases in the use of private cars, affecting air pollution and greenhouse gases emissions. Almost 80% of vehicles in the city are private cars, and they conduct 35% of their journeys within city borders. Car ownership in the city is 466 cars per 1,000 inhabitants (while the national average stands at 325). It is estimated that annual distance traveled within city borders will reach 342.5 million km by 2020. 81% of city inhabitants use private car to reach their workplace while only 14% use public transportation.
Herzliya industrial zone poses a unique transportation challenge. The area receives approx.. 40,000 incoming employees daily, mostly aged 25-50 and living in surrounding cities. This creates huge traffic jams in Hasira interchange – the main entrance to the area. People arriving by train use shuttles to the industrial zone, which are usually at maximum capacity and don’t answer the demand, despite their very high frequency.
Others use the public transportation which is not preferred in traffic junctions or in designated fast lanes and others cycling, on a trails system that fragmented by a major road hence the railway station is on the outskirts of the industrial zone.
In the city center also occur many private vehicles Traveling: Transportation of children to schools and to leisure and recreation activities and also employment in the city center.
The city strategic plan for greenhouse gases emission reductions placed a goal of reducing 15% in annual distance traveled by private cars within city limits by 2020.
Pitching to expert judges
